Vulva, vagina and penis: pathologies of the external genital organs in dogs

- external genital organs of dogs are subject to develop, as can happen in all mammals, including humans, a series of inflammatory, infectious and other diseases, which can represent a more or less serious risk for our animals and which in any case require an intervention .

VULVA AND VAGINA

La vulvitis/vaginitis it is an inflammation of the vulva / vagina that occurs very frequently in puppies between 6 weeks and 8 months of age. Many puppies do not show any symptoms and the disease resolves spontaneously, while in other cases there may be redness, white or yellow secretions that cause considerable discomfort to the animal and accentuated pain. We will notice the inflammation thanks to the presence of the anomalous material, but also because, usually, animals with vaginitis tend to persistently lick their intimate areas, causing further irritation, which can also affect the skin of the surrounding area. In and of itself the pathology is not dangerous, but it is important to inform your trusted veterinarian to rule out other pathologies or in any case to get advice on how to deal with the problem and avoid any progress in more serious forms. In mild forms, it is good to keep the area clean using special natural products, free of irritants or chemical fragrances. In the most severe forms, it may be useful to associate systemic therapy with cleaning the area.

Another problem that can occur in the female is the vaginal ptosis, that is the excessive growth of the vaginal mucosa that can come out of the vulva in a more or less evident way. This pathology is caused by an excessive production of hormones, and is often concomitant with the estrous phase. It most frequently affects some breeds such as the pug and boxer. If the leak is very evident, the only possible intervention is surgical and involves the reduction of the excess part of the mucosa and sterilization of the animal to avoid recurrence.

Il vaginal prolapse instead it is a fairly rare pathology, which usually occurs during mating or during childbirth, and involves the extroflexion of the vaginal canal. Prolapse is considered an emergency and requires immediate veterinary intervention.

PENIS

The male genital organ can also face some more or less common problems, such as simple inflammation or more serious problems such as paraphimosis.

La balanoposthitis it is one of the most frequent pathologies in male dogs, and it is an inflammation of the penis and foreskin that occurs more easily in uncastrated adult animals. Animals with balanoposthitis usually have a red penis and yellowish or greenish secretions that often smell bad if there is also an infection. In the course of balanoposthitis, animals often lick their genitals and feel painful to the touch. This pathology is not dangerous but in some cases it can worsen with infection and fever. In case of mild inflammation, it is essential to keep the area clean and use special lavages to eliminate the material accumulated in the preputial sac, reduce redness and discomfort, while in the most serious cases a tampon and targeted systemic therapy may be necessary.

Another pathology that can affect the penis is certainly the parishioners. This term refers to the extroflexion of the penis which, for various reasons, cannot be reinserted into the preputial cavity. This impossibility can be caused by injuries to the penis, such as a fracture of the penile bone, or problems with the preputial orifice which may be too narrow to allow the penis to retract, or a reduced development of the foreskin or a muscle problem. In the event that the penis remains everted, it is important to go to the trusted veterinarian as soon as possible to avoid trauma as well as excessive throttling which in the long term could cause much more serious problems. In the first instance it is possible to apply ice by placing a cloth between the latter and the skin, so as to reduce edema. The vet will try to reposition the penis after thorough cleaning and hydration and, if this is not possible, will intervene surgically by enlarging the orifice.

The dog's penis, like that of other animals (some primates, bats, hedgehogs, etc.), has the penile bone inside, also called baculum. It has the function of facilitating penetration during mating as well as protecting the urethra from possible compressions. Being a bone, in the dog it can be found, following traumatism or forced separation during mating, the fracture of the penis bone. In this case the penis appears swollen, swollen and painful, bleeding and pain is often noted when urinating. The fracture can fortunately be highlighted with a simple X-ray and may not require intervention if it is very slight, it can be approached with a urinary catheter that replaces a fixator, but may instead require surgery if more serious.
