INFORMATION
THEgastric homeostasis, in a healthy horse, it is a balance between protective and aggressive factors that guarantees the anatomical and functional integrity of the digestive system. When external or physical factors alter this compensation, aggressive substances take over, attacking the walls of the stomach to the point of causing perforation in the most serious cases. The alteration of gastric homeostasis favors the onset of ulcer (EGUS - Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome) which is due to a set of factors that include nutrition, race, type of life, stable management, stress and the use-abuse of drugs, especially anti-inflammatory drugs. The disease can affect horses of all ages but mainly affects foals in the first months of life and athletic horses, especially galloping horses.
EGUS (Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome)
By ulcer we mean erosion, that is, a lack of tissue, characterized by slow, difficult or absent healing. A peptic ulcer is a lesion of the inner lining of the stomach or intestines, called the mucosa; it can take the name of gastric ulcer if it affects the stomach, duodenal if it affects the duodenum and esophageal if the mucosa of the esophagus is affected. Chronic stress, the prolonged use of anti-inflammatories without the support of gastroprotectors, as well as the ingestion of some food toxins present in feed with an irritating effect on the mucosa, incorrect nutrition, with infrequent meals and consequently prolonged fasting, excess of sugars (concentrated feed), lack of fiber and too intense training, are the contributing causes.
Horse peptic ulcer syndrome is an insidious and difficult to diagnose disease due to a non-specific symptomatology common to many other diseases. The horse with this syndrome will present lack of appetite, fatigue in feeding, dull and continuous pain with consequent signs of aggression and nervousness, weight loss, dull and rough coat and reduced activity. In the foals episodes of dysentery, bruxism, intense salivation and duodenal lesions are added.
The effectiveness of pHiloGASTRO® in the treatment of EGUS has been demonstrated in a population of 19 horses (F. Bonelli et al., 2016, Journal of Equine Veterinary Science). The animals underwent gastroscopy before and after using the herbal compound for six weeks. In terms of gastric lesions, the group of animals treated (10/19) with pHiloGASTRO® improved significantly compared to the placebo group (9/19). pHiloGASTRO® has an active efficacy on gastric lesions.
