INFORMATION - Otitis
The term otitis refers to the inflammatory process that affects the ear in its three components, external, middle and internal. The ear is in fact divided into three portions, each of which performs a different function, including auditory and balance management.
The most common otitis in dogs and cats, but not the easiest to resolve, are external otitis, ie those affecting the pavilion and ear canal.
These ear infections, which occur with repeated shaking of the head, excessive production of earwax, itching, redness and various other symptoms, can be caused by various factors including anatomical predispositions (for example, pendulous ears), environmental (hot-humid climates) and the triggers (mites, foreign bodies, bacterial superinfections, etc.).
If neglected, these otitis can cause inflammation and subsequent infection of the innermost parts of the ear, thus determining the considerable worsening of the animal's health condition, with possible onset of neurological symptoms (ataxia, keratoconjunctivitis sicca, Horner's syndrome, vestibular syndrome peripheral, deafness, etc.).
