TIRED AND RED EYES? NO FEAR THERE IS EUPHRASIA

Its name derives from the Greek euphrasía, which means hilarity, gaiety, joy, precisely because this plant was attributed the ability to cheer up the mind !!!

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE PLANT

THEEuphrasia it belongs to the Scrofulariacee family, formed by a hundred small semi-parasitic herbs, with extra-tropical distribution, and is a spontaneous Italian plant, typical of pastures and meadows up to 2500 meters high.

It's a'annual herbaceous up to 30 cm high, with branched stem and oval leaves, small, with indented margin. Its flowers, collected in clusters, are white streaked with violet, beautiful and showy, formed by two "lips" of which the lower three lobes and very pronounced compared to the upper one. The fruit consists of a small oblong capsule enclosed in the calyx and containing numerous seeds striated longitudinally.

It is difficult to cultivate in that, being a hemiparasite of other herbaceous species, it necessarily requires association with the roots of other plants, from which it will take most of the nutrients that are necessary for it to live.

PROPERTIES AND ACTIVE INGREDIENTS

The drug is extracted from the entire plant, including the root, harvested between July and September, the period of greatest concentration of active ingredients.

Active principles: Euphrasia it contains iridoids, including aucubin and catalpolo, flavonoids, such as apigenin and quercetin, tannins such as euphrasiotannic acid, resin, saponin and essential oil.

Property: Euphrasia has anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, analgesic, immunostimulant, digestive and astringent properties. It promotes good mood and memory.

Internal use: its infusion is a valid aid in case of cough, hoarseness, liver disease, lowering of the immune system.

External use: this plant has always been used for eye problems. It is in fact a well-known remedy in case of also infectious conjunctivitis, eyelid congestion and hordeolum. It can also be used instead of mouthwash in case of ulceration and inflammation of the oral cavity, as well as in case of nasal congestion.

SOME CURIOSITIES ABOUT THE EYE PLANT

In ancient times it was known as "short-sighted herb", and was mainly known for its property ophthalmic for which it is still mainly used today.

However in the past, dried and chopped, it was also smoked as aromatic tobacco to treat lung congestion.

PREPARATIONS BASED ON EUFRASIA

infusion

Use 2-5 g of chopped euphrasia on 150 ml of boiled water. Strain after 10 minutes.

In case of gastrointestinal disorders it is recommended to take a cup of herbal tea 2-3 times a day. The infusion can also be used for eye packs or as a healing agent in case of wounds.

Decoction

Pour 2 g of finely chopped eyebright into 10 ml of cold water, boil lightly for 2 minutes, then strain. Use the decoction for external washing, 3-4 times a day.

In the pharmacy and herbal medicine you can find eye drops or gels to be applied on the eyes in case of pathology, heaviness, eye redness.
