HORSE IN SUMMER: here's how to take care of it

I horses they are animals that they require a lot of attention. During the summer season they are particularly sensitive and it is therefore important to guarantee them one proper hydration and take it care of their coat, also to avoid future problems.

 

HOW TO COOL THE HORSE

The best way to freshen up a horse is to do it bathroom! During the summer we can easily increase its frequency, also because it is an animal that sweats a lot, both when it is at rest and during work.

The horse uses sweat to lower its body temperature, but excessive sweating can lead to substantial loss of salts: it is good to ask the veterinarian for advice on any supplements to use.

It is absolutely essential to always make available fresh and clean water and make sure that the drinkers are properly washed. In summer a horse can even drink 30/40 liters of water a day!

 

HYGIENE AND CLEANING

It is essential to increase theventilation of the stable where there must be a continuous recirculation of the air, also to perceive less the odor of the feces, which in the heat can be more intense. Let's never forget that hygiene and cleanliness of the box contribute to the well-being of the horse.

Even the clogs of the horse deserve special attention: in summer, the heat generated by the litter, especially if not regularly changed, can cause damage. Keeping the litter box clean, having daily foot care and ensuring at least one exit from the pits a day, help to keep our pet healthy.

 

OUTSIDE!

Another thing not to be underestimated is the scheduling of walks: exercise must be done in the cooler hours of the day, possibly in spaces where there are trees or in any case a little shade. Horses, especially those with a light coat, can experience redness and irritation if they spend a lot of time in the sun in the hottest hours.

For the care and well-being of the horse, it is essential avoid contact with external agents which can also cause serious problems. Regularly and returning from a walk, it is important to carefully check the horse, paying particular attention to the ears, eyes, legs, tail and areas where the skin is thinner.

The use of natural products, to create a protective barrier, can be a valuable aid in preparation and after outdoor activities. Inside the boxes it can be useful to install mosquito nets or other solutions that can reduce bites and annoying hums.

 

THE IMPORTANCE OF PREVENTION

Anyone with a horse knows well that there is a purely seasonal problem that is there DER (Recurrent summer dermatitis) which appears in the spring, but intensifies during the summer. It is caused by the bite of insects belonging to the culicoid family and the consequent symptoms are severe itching, hair loss and lesions on the skin. It is called "relapsing" because it tends to reappear every year, so the best way to deal with it is represented by careful prevention: strengthen the horse's defenses and create an unfavorable environment for dangerous vectors of the disease.

 

With a few simple tricks and a little attention we can make our horse friends summer a pleasant time, contact with them is a magnificent experience that we must not give up.
